Penterating Damp

Penetrating damp, otherwise known as lateral damp, is the development of moisture through the walls and roof or below ground area of a building. Like most cases of damp, if left untreated it can cause problems for the structure and significant damage to the fabric of your home. There are many different damp proofing systems and methods to deal with these issues.

Causes of Penetrating Damp

Penetrating damp is typically caused by defects in the building’s exterior that allow water to seep through. Common causes include:

• Faulty Roofing: Broken or missing roof tiles and damaged flashing can allow water to enter through the roof.
• Blocked Gutters and Downpipes: When gutters and downpipes are blocked, water can overflow and run down the walls, causing damp patches.
• Poorly Maintained Brickwork: Cracked or deteriorating mortar joints and damaged bricks can provide entry points for water.
• Leaking Windows and Doors: Gaps around windows and doors, or damaged seals, can let water into the building.
• Defective Render or Cladding: Cracks or holes in external render or cladding can allow moisture to penetrate the walls.

Signs of Penetrating Damp

Identifying penetrating damp early can prevent extensive damage. Look out for these common signs:

• Damp Patches: Visible damp patches on walls, especially after rainfall.
• Peeling Paint or Wallpaper: Paint or wallpaper that bubbles and peels away from the wall.
• Mold and Mildew: The presence of mold and mildew, often accompanied by a musty smell.
• Staining: Brown or yellow staining on walls and ceilings.
• Deterioration of Plaster: Blistering or crumbling plaster on interior walls.
• Salt Deposits: White, powdery salt deposits on the interior walls, known as efflorescence.
